Warren Tuttle Loomis of Norwich, Vt., died Friday, Nov. 2, 2007, at his home. He was 67.

Born and raised in Needham, he was a son of Natalie High Loomis of Marshfield and Aaron Alcorn Loomis. A teacher and an engineer, Mr. Loomis graduated from Needham High School in 1958 and earned a bachelor's degree from Dartmouth College in 1962, where his fellow hockey players knew him as "Zog." He remained at Dartmouth, earning a master's degree at the Thayer School of Engineering in 1964 and earned a doctor of philosophy degree in metallurgy from the University of Michigan in 1969.

Mr. Loomis passed up a job in metallurgy to enter the nascent field of computers, settling near Dartmouth. In 1970, he founded Logic Associates, a computer software company that he led until his retirement in 2001. The company embodied his personal philosophy to focus on long-term commitments to products, employees and the community.

He was a supporter of women's business initiatives, an avid hockey fan and a believer in the American Civil Liberties Union. In his retirement, Mr. Loomis took up his lifelong interest in invention and boating by founding ForwardFace! LLC. Staffed by his friends and family, the company produced forward-facing wooden-hulled "rowing" boats, which typified his flair for technical whimsy. On warm mornings he could be found rowing, facing forward on the Connecticut River. Mr. Loomis was known among family and friends as an entrepreneur, tinkerer and prankster.

He leaves his wife, Alix Manny; three children, Aaron Loomis of Burlington, Vt., Jason Loomis of South Strafford, Vt., and Molly Loomis of Santa Cruz, Calif.; his parents; three sisters, Barbara Chisholm of Londonderry, N.H., Betsy Whitney of Norfolk, and Natalie Jones of Newbury, N.H.; and two stepchildren, John and Sam Colburn of Norwich.

The Loomis family will host a celebration of his life later in the week of Nov. 4. For information about time and location, visit www.amanny.wordpress.com.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Civil Liberties Union, 888-567-ACLU.

The family was assisted with arrangements by Knight Funeral Home, Wilder, Vt.
