Mr. Roland Windham
AIKEN, S.C. - Mr. Roland Windham, 78, of Aiken, died Friday, February 21, 2003, in Charleston.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, February 24, at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Fred Andrea and Rev. Dr. James M. King officiating.
Interment will be private in Historical Bethany Cemetery.
The family will greet friends in the church Fellowship Hall after the services.
Survived by his loving wife, Kathryn Huntley Windham and beloved children, Cindy W. Duryea and husband, Ed, Beaufort, Jane W. Key, and husband, Robert, Columbia, and Roland H. Windham, Jr. and wife, Donna, Mt. Pleasant.
Other survivors include seven grandchildren, Katy Duryea, Huntley Duryea, Tripp Windham, Amelia Windham, Logan Windham, Windy Key, Sally Key.
Mr. Windham was a member of First Baptist Church, Aiken, where he served as past chairman of deacons, a member of the choir, and member of numerous committees. He served in the Navy in WW II and retired with the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
He received a Master of Education Degree in Administration from the University of South Carolina. Mr. Windham was the City Manager of Aiken from 1963 to 1991, He was past President of Rotary Club of Aiken, past District Governor of Rotary District #7750, active in United Way of Aiken County. He served on the board of Aiken Comm. Hospital, SCANA Advisory Board, Aiken Soil and Water Conservation Board, First Citizens Bank of Aiken. He received rewards from Rotary Internationals "Service Above Self", the highest and rarest honor that the international service club can bestow. He was awarded the Service to Mankind Award by Aiken Sertoma Club, ad was named Governmental Administrator of the Year for the state of SC. Several public entities have been named in his honor. These include the Aiken public works building, the performing arts stage in Hopeland Gardens, and the Windham House, a new facility for senior citizens.
In addition to his career achievements, Mr. Windham did humanitarian work in Bulgaria and Russia, assisting them in establishing local democratic government practices.
