∼Cummings was Third Assistant Engineer on the CSS Alabama. During a stop for repairs and refit at Saldanha Bay, S. Africa, a party of Ships Officers went ashore as a recreational hunting party. Returning to the ship and while reaching for his rifle, Cummings accidently discharged his piece into his heart.
He was buried in a local family plot. Later, Royal Navy Officers placed a permanent stone over the grave. This is believed to be the only gravestone marked " A Citizen of the Confederate States of America " on the African continent.
