Korean War veteran, retired building inspector
William John Mundy, 79, of Vineland passed away suddenly Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009, at home.
William was born in Atlantic City to the late William J. and Elvira (Harris) Mundy and lived in Vineland the past 35 years. He attended Atlantic City public schools. William was the first African- American Eagle Scout in Atlantic County. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Army, and retired from the National Guard Reserves after 26 years of service. Prior to retirement, he was a code official/building inspector for the state of New Jersey Division of Youth & Family Services for 30 years. William was an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church of Vineland, and served as an usher and helped in the soup kitchen. William was a lifelong member of NAACP, Sierra Club, Cumberland County Nature Club and theF&AM Lodge, Doric Chapter of Mizpah. William was a member of Lucky 13 RV Club and enjoyed traveling extensively throughout the United States. He enjoyed photography and bird watching.
Survivors include his loving wife of 50 years, Dolores (Green) Mundy of Vineland; three daughters, the Rev. Dr. B. JoAnn Mundy of Three Rivers, Mich., Monica C. Mundy of Millville and TerriR. Mundy of Manhattan, N.Y.; one son, William John Mundy and partner Johnathan Cassie of Simi Valley, Calif.; three grandchildren, William J. Mundy IV, Quentin Phillip Mundy and Michaela Cornelia Mundy, all at home; and many cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m.today from the Trinity Episcopal Church, 8th and Wood streets, Vineland, with Father James Fisher officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service in the church.
Burial will follow in Atlantic County Veterans Cemetery, Estell Manor.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations in William's memory be sent to Spirit & Truth Ministries, care of the soup kitchen, P.O. Box 89, Vineland, NJ 08362;or ERACCE (Eliminating Racism & Claiming/Celebrating Equality), 1000 W. Paterson St., Kalamazoo, Mich. 49007.
