The son of Theodore Norton and Mary Judd Norton, Augustus served as one of the first pastors of the First Presbyterian Church in Alton from 1839 to 1858 and edited the "Presbytery", the newspaper of Presbyterian Church in Illinois. He was known as the "Father of Presbyterianism in Illinois" and founded many churches in Illinois, Missouri and Kansas.
On November 12, 1834, Augustus married Eliza Rogers, daughter of Deacon Noah Rogers, of Cornwall, Connecticut. She was born August 22, 1812. They were the parents of five children, two sons and three daughters. He attended Yale College, entering in 1828, graduating on August 15, 1832 with one of the highest honors of the class.
He was licensed by the Presbytery of Columbia September 17, 1834 at Stockport, New York. On April 1, 1835, he was ordained by the Presbyterian Church of Windham, Greene County, New York.
