Though she was born in St Teath, her family came from the St Breward and Blisland area on the edge of Bodmin Moor in Cornwall, and dhe lived there after marriage, until in about 1876 the family emigrated to the Cape Colony. Though several years older than her husband she lived 14 years after his death, and was known in the family as a fearsome matriarch.
