Samuel H.B. Clarkson was born around 1792/1793 in Kentucky (according to 1850 census record) or Virginia (according to some family records). He was married to Martha McHatton. She may have been his second wife. He was the father of: Albert E. Clarkson, born about 1818; Franklin E. Clarkson born about 1822; Samuel H.B. Clarkson, born 1828; William M. Clarkson, born 1832; and Callista Clarkson born about 1836. When the gold excitement began, Samuel left his home and went to California with the hope of finding his fortune.
