The funeral was held at 2 p.m., Saturday, June 2, at Piney Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Penny Ziemer and the Rev. Spencer Brown officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Born in 1928 in Sampson County, Mr. Oates was the son of the late Edwin and Laura Mitchell Oates. He was a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a retired farmer.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Kathleen Hopkins, Laura Smith and Mary Riggle; and four brothers, Mitchell Oates, Joe Oates, John Oates and Sam Oates.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Piney Grove Baptist Church Cemetery Fund or Sampson Regional Medical Center Skill Nursing Unit.
