Bartholomew (or Bartlett, Bart, or Barnett) Sr. was probably born around 1735, probably in Virginia.

He met and married Barbara __ probably by 1757. Some family histories say her surname was Hundley, but the only source for this seems to be the much later marriage of a Hugh Folas to Barbara Hundley on 5 Dec 1791 in Henry Co., VA.

Bart Sr. had a brother Luke, as is shown by the 1839 will of one of Bart Sr.'s grandsons, Bart Deweese, which identified Christopher Foley, son of Luke, as Bart Deweese's cousin.

Nov 1767 - The first record found of Bartholomew so far was when he first bought land in what later became Patrick Co., Virginia. At the time it was in Pittsylvania county:

"Luke and Bart were brothers, they both claimed free land in the western territories of Virginia beginning in 1767 and continuing until 1768. Many of their claims are on adjoining pieces of property and as some of the claims and later deeds list the others' shared property line, they were definitely of the same generation.
Luke was in Mecklenburg Co., VA as early as 1765, but both he and Bart bought land inland that later became Patrick Co., VA in 1767. Puppey Creek is in Patrick County. At the time of the land claim it was part of Pittsylvania, but as the settlements moved westward they split off counties from Pittsylvania. Henry County was formed from Pittsylvania in 1776, then Patrick was formed from Henry in 1791. So the Foley's weren't moving, the county names were changing where they were living as the state became organized in the western parts of Virginia."

1770 Bartholomew was listed as a tithable in Pittsylvania Co., VA, probably while living with Barbara and their young family on their land in what was to become Patrick Co., VA:

Jan 1778 - Henry Co., VA militia. Bartlett and a George Foley (unidentified, unless he was Luke's son Gabriel Foley) both served in the militia during the Revolutionary War. Ref. VA Historical Magazine V-17, p. 190.

The first record of Bart Sr. and Barbary Sr. in Henry Co. was when they bought land in 1780 on Sycamore Creek. They bought more land in 1785 and were next door neighbors to Bart Sr.'s brother, Luke and his wife Mary.

Bart was not on the 1782 Henry Co., VA personal tax list.

This record from 1787 looks like some kind of vote. Some of the names have the word "disputed" after them, so apparently all identities and the right to vote were checked. All names are numbered. This is the first time that two Bart Foleys can be distinguished. The second Bart must have been Luke's son as he was not listed among Bartholomew and Barbara's heirs in 1795, but was still living in Patrick Co., VA in 1804:

In 1790, Bartholomew was taxed for three head of cattle, but not for himself, indicating that he was either too old or too disabled to be taxable. He is listed next to John Ferrell:

Bart Sr. died in 1793. His son-in-law Cornelius Deweese gave bond to administer his estate in Dec 1793:

But Cornelius made his will and died shortly afterwards himself and Barbary Sr. took on the job of administratrix of Bartholomew's estate. This is the first time that Barbara is referred to as "Sr." to distinguish her from her married daughter Mrs. Barbara Foley. Bridget Foley was Bartholomew and Barbara's youngest daughter:

26 Dec 1796 - Daughter Eleanor "Nellie" sold the land she had inherited from Bartholomew's estate to neighbor Humphrey Smith, who by now was executor of her brother-in-law Cornelius Deweese's estate:

"Relinquishment by Elenor Foley, one of the heirs of Bartley Foley, deceased, and have this day sold to Humphrey Smith all and singular my right, title and interest in and to all the lands and tenements which the said Foley died seized of for value received and do hereby relinquish all claims to his estate.

The William T. Foley referenced below may be Bartholomew and Barbara Sr.'s oldest grandson, William Deweese, who seems to have used the Foley name (at least occasionally) after his father Cornelius Deweese died. As Bartholomew and Barbara had no surviving sons, he may have done this to continue the family name:

Another list of Barbary Sr.'s heirs is given in 1803. Her children had come to an earlier agreement to allow her to remain in the family home without splitting off her dower land, but now they petition the court to divide the land. Again, a second Barbary Foley, her daughter, is listed among the heirs. The daughters are listed in the same order as in the 1795 bond and this was probably their birth order:

1807 - Barbara has become incapacitated in her old age and requests Richard Thomas to administer her affairs. It seems that by this time all of her sons-in-law had either left the area or were otherwise unable to manage the job. She is again referred to as "Sr." to distinguish her from her daughter Mrs. Barbara Foley:

"Richard Thomas is at the request of Barbary Foley Sr. appointed to superintend her business she being in some degree deranged, & the said Richard Thomas & David Harbour is hereafter to enter into bond for the faithful administering the estate of the said Barbary Foley Sr. according to law."

1807 - Patrick Co., VA deed with Barbary Jr. and Lity as witnesses for Barbary Sr. [I don't have details of this deed.]

This road survey appears to be referring to Bartholow Foley's land:

"Benjamin Mayo is appointed surveyor of the road from the branch in Foley's old field to the top of the bull Mountain in the Place of John A. Hancock & the list filed be his Gang."

May 1809 - both Elizabeth Deweese (the Widow Deweese), daughter of Barbara Sr. and "the Widow Foley" are referenced in this road survey order. The "Widow Foley" was likely Barbara Sr., although it's possible that her daughter Barbara was also widowed by this time.

Adam Turner, James Ferrell, John Burnett & W. Rowland or any 3 of them are appointed to view a way to turn the road from the Widow Duweeses to to the top of the hill between Richard Sharp's & Hairston's Store & make report thereof to the Court.
Moses Harbour is Appointed Surveyor of the Road in the Place of James Ferrell from the forks near the Widow Foleys to the forks below Benjamin Mayo's & the list filed be his Gang."

In 1816, Humphrey Smith either sold or gave the land he had acquired from Eleanor to Barbary Foley. It's not clear if this is Eleanor's mother Barbara Sr. or her sister Barbara Jr., but it seems most likely that Barbara Sr. was deceased by this time:

Again, the William Foley referenced here appears to have been Bartholomew and Barbara Sr.'s grandson William Deweese:

Barbara Sr. definitely died by Sep 1829, when the administers of her estate, one of whom was Richard Thomas, paid a debt to the estate of John Burnett:

The other mention of a second Bartlett Foley who was alive at least nine years after Bart Sr.'s death:

Bart Sr. and Barbary Sr. apparently had no surviving son, but their eldest daughter Elizabeth Deweese's son William seems to have assumed the name Foley to carry it on.

Elizabeth sons William and Bartlett were ordered by the county court to be "bound out" as apprentices to learn trades, as had been requested by their father in his will, after Humphrey Smith, the will's executor, failed to act:

Son William apparently assumed the name Foley after his father's death. His mother may have encouraged him to do so, as her father Bartlett Sr. apparently had no surviving son and Cornelius had sons from a previous marriage in addition to Bartlett by Elizabeth.

Elizabeth appears to be still living in 1817 when she and her children sold land. It's possible the Elizabeth listed was Bartlett's wife, if he was married:

Elizabeth Foley's children:

As Cornelius suggested in his will that William and his younger brother Bartlett be bound out to learn a trade, I'm guessing William was at least about fourteen years old in 1794. This age would seem to tally with the ages of Cornelius's children from his first marriage.

He may have taken the name Foley after his father's death.

This William T. Foley seems to have been William Deweese:

1810 - William wasn't on the Patrick Co., VA tax list as either Deweese or Foley.

1816 - This mention of Eleanor refers back to the 1796 deed. The man she sold her inheritance of land to, Humphrey Smith, now sells or gives it to Eleanor's widowed sister, Barbara Foley, Jr.:
