Fern Arlene Fowler was born March 13, 1922 in Brooklyn, Iowa, the daughter of Fred Fowler and Valetta Murdock Fowler. She attended rural school in Madison Township and was a proud graduate of the great Class of 1939 of Brooklyn High School. Arlene attended Iowa State University in Ames, before transferring to and graduating from the University of Iowa in 1943 with a degree in sociology. She furthered her education and received a masters degree in 1965.
While working in Chicago, she met Louis "Doc" W. Keiser, an officer in the U.S. Army Air Corp, from Fremont, OH. The two were married on June 30, 1944, before Doc was deployed to Europe during WWII. The couple made their home in Windsor Heights briefly before moving to Brooklyn in 1949.
Arlene was one of the first special education teachers in the state of Iowa for students with moderate and severe disabilities. She taught students for a number of years in a one-room school house at the intersection of Old 6 and Rte. 63 before serving as a curriculum consultant in Tama County. She loved her twenty years working as an Administrator of Early Childhood Special Education Services in Marshalltown with AEA 6. She retired in 1992.
Arlene loved to travel and go out to eat. She loved nature and her friends. Most of all, Arlene loved her family and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Brooklyn, PEO Chapter AK, and Chi Omega sorority.
