U.S. Air Force Retired Lt. Colonel Robert W. Martin, 83, of Huntsville, a World War II veteran, died in his home Thursday. He was born in Sandusky, Ohio, and raised his family in Huntsville.


Mr. Martin retired from active duty in 1961 after 22 years of service. Mr. Martin's awards and decorations include the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Croix de Guerre with Bronze Palms and the Air Medal with three Oak Clusters. Because of his service to the Allied war effort, he was presented to the King and Queen of England, and was one of the first inductees into the Madison County Hall of Heroes.


He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Campbell Martin; his parents, Charles Taylor Martin and Clara Orgain Martin; and his brother, Charles Taylor Martin Jr.


Survivors include daughter, Melanie Martin McRae and son-in-law, Bruce Lee McRae of Huntsville; son, Dr. Robert W. Martin Jr. and daughter-in-law, Mary Hardin Martin of San Ramone, Calif. and son, James Duncan Martin of Huntsville; grandchildren, Catherine Campbell Boles and William Alexander Boles II of Huntsville, Jennifer Allyson Martin of San Ramone, Calif., and Taylor James Martin and William Jared Martin of Huntsville.


Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. The memorial service, with full military honors, will follow at 4 p.m. with Rev. Don Cross officiating.
