Mr Street was my teacher in year 5 at Charlestown Primary School, he was my favorite teacher and I grew to love him.
From what I know of his early life he had always been a school teacher and also a Head Master. He loved his family dearly and always wrote with pride about them and later on his Grandchildren. Every year without fail I would always see him and his wife at our local fair where they would be dressed up to the nines. Mrs Street with hat, hand bag and gloves and Mr Street in a suit and tie with suspenders and hat which he always removed when saying hello to Ladies.
Mr Street loved cricket and whenever he got the chance he would go and watch it live at the cricket pitch in Newcastle.
When I left primary school and started High School I started to write to him to keep in touch, this is something that continued well into my adult life and I always called him Mr Street. All through my ups and downs in life Mr Street was there until unfortunately we lost touch in the late 90's when his memory started to fail him and he went to live with his son. The last time I saw him I took my 6 month old son to meet him I knew it would be my last because he asked me who I was, after I jogged his memory the memories came flooding back to him but I knew it was only a matter of time before he lost all memory of me. I only found out this year through some research that he had died in 2002. He would have been about 90 years old, I never did forget his birthday because his was the day before mine.
It broke my heart that I couldn't say my last farewell, but he will live on in my heart as my teacher who taught me not just the 3 R's but a man who taught me right from wrong, about manners and self confidence. He was not only a Teacher, strict but fair, he was a Gentleman, a Husband and Father. A man of integrity and I will never forget him.
So this little Memorial is my Goodbye to him.
