Joseph Settle (146923428)

Joseph L. Settle formerly called "Uncle Joe" by all who knew him passed away peacefully at the home of his oldest daughter, Mrs. Sue Wells, at the extreme age of 91, Friday morning September 23 at 4 o'clock, and was buried at the Allen cemetery beside his wife that afternoon. He leaves three children to mourn their loss Mrs. Sue Wells, wife of T. L. Wells, Mrs. L. C. Parham, wife of W. L. Parham, and Premily Farmer, wife of R. E. Farmer, also four grand children, I. S., O. M., F, E., and Melvin Parham. His son James Settle died about 25 years ago.
His early days were spent around Bardstown, where he made occasional trips to Louisville when it was only a small town. Then were the days of flat boats. and the river held an attraction for him, so he made several trips by flat boat to New Orleans. But at the age of 27 he came to the Green River country and married Miss Betsy France, near Bremen Kentucky. He then went to Daviess county, but after a few years he moved to Ohio county. Then he purchased a farm where Central City, Kentucky now stands where he lived for seven or eight years. Then he moved to the southern part of Muhlenberg County near Weir, there he spent the remainder of his life. He was loved and respected by all who knew him by both young and old; as a delightful entertainer, often telling of his thrilling adventures of the frontier life. About 40 years ago he gave his heart to God, and became a member of The Church of Christ, and as he became older he become stronger in the faith, and his last active days were devoted to worship and work in The Church of God of which he was a deacon. And now after his works and labors he has gone on to receive his reward, eternal life through Jesus Christ and obedience to His will.
