Emporia Gazette, The - Emporia, Kansas, Wednesday Evening, April 8, 1908;
KANSAS FARMER SUICIDES, Agra, Kan., April 8. - James L. Gaines, a rich farmer living near here committed suicide today. He ended his life by hanging himself with a log chain. Worrying over a recently made tax statement is the given cause.

Kirwin Kansan - April 9. 1908;
Jim Gaines Commits Suicide.
Wednesday morning, between the hours of 5 and 6 o'clock, Jim Gaines of Agra committed suicide by hanging. He used a log chain for a rope. About five o'clock Mr. Gaines got up and left the house and this was the last time he was seen alive. When found he was hanging in a tree on Bruce Donovan's farm, west of where Mr. Gaines lived. Mr. Gaines was one of Phillips county's hard working and industrious farmers. Of late he had worried some and it is thought that this unbalanced his mind, causing him to do the rash act. The deed has cast a gloom over the community in which he lived, for he was a good father, kind neighbor and a friend to everybody. He leaves a wife, seven boys, two brothers, a sister and a host of friends to mourn his death. The family has the sympathy of the entire neighborhood in their sad bereavement.
