Birth: Apr. 21, 1859
Death: Nov. 21, 1931

Frankfort, Kansas, Index
Monday, November 9, 1931

George Wesley Dennis, a pioneer resident
of the Bigelow, Kansas, neighborhood had
been found dead, November 21, in a pasture
about one half mile east of his farm home,
with a shotgun wound in his left side.

He had left the house early in the afternoon,
and said that he was going to a nearby
pasture and would take the gun along to be
used in case he saw any rabbits or squirrels.
When he did not return for several hours
Mrs. Dennis informed the neighbors and a
search was started. Shortly before 6:00 p.m.
his remains were found near a fence line.

The body was found lying about six feet
away from the fence, and the 12 gauge
shotgun was still hanging in the fence,
where it had caught in a splice of wire.
it appeared that Mr. Dennis had climbed
through the fence and dragged the gun
after him, and it had accidentally
discharged when the trigger caught on the
wire.

Sheriff John Kirch and Deputy coroner,
Dick Schmidt were called and after making
their investigation reported the death as
a accident.

Mr. Dennis was a well liked and hard
working man and had lived on the home
farm for more than sixty-three years,
having come there with his parents when
he was about nine years of age. He was
born on April 21, 1859 and would have
been 73 next month.

Besides his wife, Sarah, he is survived by
one son, J.E. Dennis of Kansas City,
Missouri; six daughters, Mrs. C.A. Drager,
Asherville, Kansas, Mrs. E.E. Heaton, of
Vermillion, Kansas, Mrs. F.C. Haar, of
Sedalia, Missouri, Mrs. Clyde Jones, of
Excelsior Springs, Missouri, Mrs. Frank
Bishop, Liberty, Missouri, Mrs. Fred
Carlson, Irving, Kansas; two sisters, Mrs.
Mary Smith, Centralia, Kansas and Mrs.
Sarah Smith, Du Bois, Nebraska.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist
Church in Bigelow, Kansas at 2:30 p.m.
with Reverend A.J. Cutrell.

Burial was in the Antioch Cemetery,
southwest of Frankfort, Kansas.
