Henry Harrison HINES was the father of 14 children who survived infancy. He was married twice: first to Betsey FALL (abt 1820 - Mar 1850) about 1837, in Jefferson County, NY, USA; second to Margaret Pamelia SHAFER (18 Dec 1826 - 23 Nov 1903), on 05 Feb 1853, in Wentworth County, Ontario.

Henry came to Canada first in 1844 and then again with Betsey circa 1850 where she died in childbirth (twins - one survived). To date, no death nor burial information has been found for Betsey. Their children were:
Edmund Van Buren (aka Edmond) HINES 1840 – 1918
Oren Washington (or Orin / Orrin) HINES 1842 – 1914
Henry Franklin (known as Frank) HINES 1843 – 1897
Charles Harrison HINES 1845 – 1930
James Almont (or Almonte) HINES 1847 – 1925
John Payne (or Paine / Pain) HINES 1850 – 1897
Unknown twin baby HINES 1850 – 1850
Two additional children are mentioned (in an affidavit in a CW Pension record) as having been born but that died young. The record gave no names, dates or ages.

Five of his 6 sons with Betsey fought in the US Union Army during the Civil War. All five CW enlistees survived and remained in the USA after the war. Only Charles did not enlist and remained in Canada the rest of his life.

Henry and Margaret had 8 children - two daughters and 6 sons:
Horatio Horace HINES 1853 – 1885
