January 13, 1950 - May 4, 2013 Born near Xenia, Ohio, the eldest of eight children of Mary M. and William J. White, Ellen White passed away quietly in her sleep, at home in Singapore at the age of 63.
A graduate of Palisades High School, Los Angeles, and the University of California, San Diego, Ellen went on to specialize in linguistics. Competent in several languages, she was an accomplished reader and speaker of the Mandarin dialect.
Most of her adult life she lived in Asia. She was a beloved teacher, who at the time of her death was Director of Admission at the Singapore American School.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Timothy Catholic Church in Los Angeles on 5/18/13, 11:00 A.M. Burial Service will be held at Calvary Cemetery, Knoxville, TN.
Once a very wise woman said: "To live in the hearts we leave behind is not to die." Ellen lives in the heart of her son, Luke, her parents, her brothers and sisters, as well as many nieces and nephews, cousins and a legion of friends around the world. Bear witness:
MOTHER: "You will forever be my bright, shining girl."
DADDY: "A lady of grace, charm and accomplishments. I miss you greatly. You lived the life you imagined."
SISTER CLANCY, PETER, MAX, ERIC: "My sister, oh my sister. I love so. Rest, sweetly in the arms of God."
SISTER ANNE: "My beautiful sister, what an exciting life; what a story teller."
SISTER MARTHA: "Ellen, your love has sheltered me from harm, guided me through difficult times, and encouraged me to seek my goals. Thank you for your love and inspiration. Thank you for loving me."
AUNT TERESA: "Ellen had a great love for Grandma White and it was truly reciprocated. God bless both of them."
COUSIN KATHLEEN: "Ellen had the rare pleasure to live out her destiny of leadership, teaching, loving, appreciating art in all forms, and traveling around the world gathering stories to share with all those she met thereafter. The time we spent with Grandma White shaped both of our lives as she so patiently explained our responsibilities to use our gifts for good. Be still, now. Let God love you."
COUSIN LINDA: "Ellen captivated her listeners wherever she was telling stories."
COUSIN MARGARET: "Ellen was a "Lady" with the biggest heart of anyone I have ever known."
COUSIN MARY NELL: "Ellen was unique, fascinating, and a beautiful woman. Her visits to Knoxville were always filled with entertaining stories of her adventurous exploits. Her kind sprit and joy of life will be missed."
COUSIN MIKE: "We all looked forward to Ellen's visits - she was such a joy!"
COUSIN LIZ: "With each visit, Ellen brought the "world" with her. Ellen was one of the classiest people I have ever known."
COUSIN JOSIE: "Ellen was a wonderful storyteller. I always enjoyed listening to stories of her adventures."
PAT BARKLEY: "A gracious, dignified woman of great intellect and wit, and a true and trusted friend."
BRANDI ROTH: "You have been such an inspiration to so many students and friends - so encouraging to each and every project and episode that happened over decades of friendship-your curiosity-your wit-your insatiable intellect..."
ANNIE CHOLAKIAN: "You, sun and moon have managed to shine even while obscured by clouds. So, shine for me now as I miss my dear, beautiful friend, Ellen - a light in my life since we were fourteen.
" SISTER TERESA: "My big sister. Bold, courageous and so essential to my life. I will love you forever and miss you forever. Your sprit will always be with me in my broken heart."
BROTHER PAUL: "You have led us through life. Guide us. Love us. Thank you for being an extraordinary sister. Thank you for all that you have done." [email protected]
