Considered a Canadian legend he best known for his 25 years years on stage at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Ontario, Canada. He was also considered an accomplished screen and television actor and comedian. A graduate of the University of Guelph he studied in New York as well. At the 17th Genie Awards in 1996, The Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television recognized Donaldson as best supporting-actor for his work in the film version of "Long Day's Journey Into Night".He died at the age of 57 after a 2 year battle with lung cancer leaving his wife Sheila McCarthy, also an actress who he worked with, and two daughters.
