One of the two known children (both sons) of Priscilla "Silla" Pounds, 1791-1893 and an unknown father or fathers. Priscilla was mulatto, but neither the name nor the racial identify of Shack's father is known. Only one thing seems certain: she did not name either boy after his father.

Shack married Martha "Lilly" James (born 1830, died after 1910. An 1852 marriage record exists for them, but their first known children were born in 1847 and 1849. This sort of delay in the marriage is common in rural areas in the 19th century. Fourteen children are known to this marriage.

In addition to the one child linked below and omitting one infant, the known children are John, William, Sandy, Meshack Jr., Sarah, Joseph L., Jacob, Martha A. “Fanny,” Jackson S., Peter, and Daniel, all born between 1847 and 1876.

The last census for both Meshack and Lilly is 1900, so it must be supposed that they had died before the 1910 census. In 1900 they were living in the Dan River district of Pittsylvania county.
