George W. McQuade, 84, of Plaice Cove, formerly of Chelmsford, Mass., died peacefully Saturday, December 27, 2008, surrounded by his loving wife and family. He was born October 22, 1924, in Lowell, Mass., the son of the late Bernard J. and Mabel M. (McManus) McQuade. Mr. McQuade was a graduate of Lowell High School, attended University of Cincinnati, Shrivenham American University in Oxford, England, and he received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Northeastern University. He served in the Army Air Corps as a lieutenant where he flew 26 combat missions in World War II as Navigator Bonbardier in the European Theatre of Operations. He received five Battle Stars, five Air Medals and a Presidential Citation. He owned the Hub Hosiery Mills in Lowell, was president of the William T. Tonner Company and co-owned Bonnie Doon Hosiery in Conn.He was a former member of Mt. Pleasant Golf Club, Abenaqui Country Club, Vesper Country Club, Lowell Rotary Club Board of Directors, Corporator of Central Savings Bank, Director of Union National Bank; Director of Troy Mills, Director of Alex Lee Wallau Inc., and was a licensed Real Estate broker. Family members include his wife of 50 years, Claire Lelia (DeSelle) McQuade of Hampton; his children, Lee-Ann Gonsalves and her husband Jim of Portsmouth, Kimberly M. McGreevy and her husband Michael of Portsmouth, Kerin M. Ferrin and her husband Thomas of Stratham; his grandchildren, Annie, Jack and Jimmy Gonsalves, Daniel and Ryan McGreevy, and Catherine and Peter Ferrin; his mother-in-law, Jeannette DeSelle of Exeter; his caregiver, Kurt Mackle; his brother, Paul R. McQuade and his wife Sally of Dover; and his sister-in-law, Lorraine McQuade of Lowell. Mr. McQuade was predeceased by his brother, Charles F. McQuade, and a sister, Elizabeth Sharkey of Lowell. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 31, 2008, in St. Theresa Church, 815 Central Road, Rye Beach. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth.
