POQUOSON - Margaret Pitchford "Margie" Freeman, 82, a native and lifelong resident of the Peninsula, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 8, 2011, with her family by her side.

She attended Hilton Elementary, Warwick High and Newport News High Schools, and was a graduate of the College of William & Mary, with a B.S. in Business Administration and a master's degree in Education. She was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority and Delta Kappa Gamma at William & Mary. She retired in 1993 from Poquoson Public Schools, after 23 years of teaching, and was a member of the Poquoson Retired Teachers Association. Gardening, her books, and her home were the center of her life.

Mrs. Freeman was preceded in death by her parents, Frank H. and Mary Scruggs Pitchford; her sister, Peggy P. Pedersen; and her stepmothers, Ethel Cox Pitchford and Lois Sarver Pitchford.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Gerald Q. Freeman Sr.; four children, Jenny Ward and husband, Durand, Lynne Weaver and husband, Robert, Gerald "Jay" Freeman Jr. and wife, Karen, and George "Gee" Freeman and wife, Heather; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; half-brother, Frank H. Pitchford Jr. and wife, Lyn; adopted brother, Clyde E. Pitchford; and special nephew, Michael Loviner.

...Her wishes were that her cremains be scattered in Bennett's Creek, Poquoson, at a later date.

Ashes scattered along with her husbands (Gerald Q Freeman) on September 1, 2012. This would have been their 61st wedding anniversary. Location of ashes scattered was Bennett's Creek behind their home of nearly 49 years.
