Joseph Davern worked in the mines in Hibbing, Minnesota and he was a steel and iron subcontractor for the city of St. Paul, Minnesota. He was a subcontractor of American Bridge and Steel Co. He worked on the second St. Paul High Bridge, the State Capitol and the Cathedral of St. Paul. Davern personally placed the 14-foot steel crucifix adorning the St. Paul Cathedral on May 18, 1914. He and his crew of workers also placed the Golden Horses just below the State Capitol dome and they erected the first High Bridge over the Mississippi River in St. Paul. Joseph married Anna Frances Malley on April 15, 1891 and they raised eight children.
Joseph died in 1928 and is buried in Calvary Cemetery.
