Son of Rev. William Carney Slay and Belinda McDuffie. In 1860, he was a twenty year old and living in the household of William Jones Conn, in laden Springs, Choctaw County, Alabama. He was employed as a clerk.

Carney Slay Jr., was 23 years old and single, a resident of Buccatunna, Mississippi, when he enlisted on May 14, 1861. He was a Private in Capt. Williams J. Eckford's Company B, 13th Mississippi Infantry, known as the "Wayne Rifles." He was absent from the battles at Manassa, Maryland Heights, and Sharpsburg due to illness. He was captured at the First Battle of Fredericksburg on December 11, 1862. At Gettysburg, he served as part of Gen Barksdale Brigade, and was severely wounded on July 2, 1863 (possibly during the battle at the Peach Orchard). He was again wounded at Cedar Run on October 19, 1864. The last record of Carney Slay Jr., evident was on 13 March, 1865. No subsequent records have been located on him.
