She was born on Nov. 6, 1953 at Lakeview Hospital, the daughter of Gene and Carolyn Miller Coffman. She was a graduate of Immanuel Lutheran School and Danville High School, graduating a year early. After graduating from the University of Illinois and Sangamon State University with bachelor's and master's degree respectively, she began her teaching career at Danville Area Community College (then Danville Junior College) at the age of 21. She taught numerous literature and creative writing courses, and served as the faculty advisor for "Waiting for Rain," the college's literary magazine. She was known for her passion of writing and literature, and her friendliness to staff and colleagues alike.
She married James Mackey on June 13, 1981 and at the age of 43 gave birth to her beloved daughter, Elizabeth Rose Coffman-Mackey.
She will always be remembered for her unbridled joy of people and places, her kindness and generosity, her loyalty, intelligence, wit, beauty and passion.
