Dr. Julianne Shea Collins, 42, resident of 76 Park Lane, wife of Bryan Wesson, passed away Sept. 23, 2011 at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in San Francisco, CA, she was a daughter of Kenneth J. Collins and Rosalie Collins.
Dr. Julianne Shea Collins grew up in Coffee Creek, CA, and later graduated with a PhD in medical genetics from the University of Alabama. She married her husband Bryan Wesson in 2001 after they moved to South Carolina together. Julianne was passionate about her work as an associate research scientist and genetic epidemiologist at the Greenwood Genetic Center. She was involved with the SC Birth Defects Foundation, the National Birth Defects Prevention Network and the Center for Disease Control. She mentored students as an adjunct professor of both Clemson University and the University of South Carolina. Julianne and Bryan volunteered with local area 4H clubs and often hosted shows at their farm's arena. She loved horses all her life and her farm included her precious horses, dogs, cats, chickens and a turtle.
Julianne leaves behind her husband, Bryan Wesson of Calhoun Falls, SC; her parents, Rosalie and Ken Collins of Coffee Creek, CA; her brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Jennifer Collins, with their two children, Aidan and Ethan of Englewood, CO; her sister, Joanna Collins of Taylors, SC; and her special friends Sasha Williams of Clemson, SC, and Charlene Hughes of Iva, SC.
A memorial service will be Friday Sept. 30, 2011 at 1 p.m. at Grace Community Church in Greenwood, SC. Later that evening at 6:30 p.m., a Celebration of Julianne's life will be in the main lobby of the JC Self Research Institute Building at the Greenwood Genetic Center.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in memory of Julianne may be made to: Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, www.lls.org/; Humane Society at www.humanesociety.org/; and South Carolina Birth Defects Foundation, 113 Gregor Mendel Circle, Greenwood, SC 29646.
