Dr. Stanley Burgess, 85, of Huntingdon, passed away at 4:25 a.m. Wednesday, February 2, 2011, at The Oaks at Westminster Woods, Huntingdon.
Born May 12, 1925, in New Brighton, he was a son of the late William and Edith (Payton) Burgess. He was united in marriage to the former Margaret "Peggy" Fleming on May 27, 1945. Mrs. Burgess survives at their home.
In addition to his wife, Dr. Burgess is survived by a son, Bruce Allen Burgess, Huntingdon.
He is also survived by three cousins; Ted Smith, North Carolina; Evelyn Long, Florida; and Mary Taylor, Dover, Del.; two nephews, Blaine Burgess, Beaver Falls and Brian Burgess, Dover, Del.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Burgess.
Dr. Burgess was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Huntingdon.
He served in the United States Navy, from which he was honorably discharged as a lieutenant following World War II.
Dr. Burgess was a 1943 graduate of New Brighton High School and following his military service, graduated from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry, Philadelphia.
For many years, he operated his optometrist office in Mount Union. He sold the practice to Drs. Robert and Artamarie Barclay in 1986, continuing his association with that office for a year before retiring.
