Richard Clay Dean, 82, of Sheffield passed away Sunday, Dec. 5, 2010, at Heritage Manor nursing home in Chillicothe.

He was born June 4, 1928, in Peoria to Frederick B. and Irene Belle Clay Dean. He married JoAnn McLennan on Nov. 8, 1969, in Toulon. She preceded him in death in April 2010.

He also was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Patricia J. Wilson.

He is survived by his children, Kenneth A. (Christina) Dean of Beloit, Wis., and Keith A. (Edna) Dean of Peoria; and grandsons, Jadon and Baxter Dean.

Richard was a graduate of Sheffield High School and attended classes at Eureka College.

He started working at age 12 for a bank in Sheffield. He worked as a tow boat custodian for the Ohio River Co., retiring in 1971 as the first unlicensed seaman to retire on a pension from that company. He also worked as a custodian for IVC School District, retiring in 1983.

Richard was a Red Cross blood donor with a record of 20 gallons donated. He was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church for 33 years.

Dick always was ready to talk openly about Illinois politics and if and when his Chicago Cubs would win the World Series.

Cremation has been accorded and a memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 15, 2010, at the Shore Acres Club House in Chillicothe at 11 a.m. Please bring your memories, photos and stories to share.

Memorials may be made to Pilgrim Park, United Church of Christ in Princeton or Rescue 33 in Chillicothe.

The Cremation Society of Mid-Illinois Co., Pekin/Peoria, is assisting the family with arrangements.
