|Death: ||Sep. 17, 1862|
Civil War Union Soldier. Worcester, New York was the enlistment place for this 20-year old recruit, after which he was mustered in as a corporal into Company I, 51st New York Infantry on October 9, 1861. Present at the battle of Antietam, he and his regiment attempted the capture of a stone bridge (Burnside's Bridge). The Georgians of Confederate General Robert Toombs, positioned on raised ground opposite, staunchly opposed this crossing by the Federals, and delivered huge losses to their enemy. It was this moment and sector of the Antietam battlefield that Corporal Keefe made the supreme sacrifice that a soldier can make.
