Born November 3, 1770, Liverpool, England. Educated at the Seminary of St. Irénée, Lyon, France, and the Jesuit Novitiate near Stoneyhurst, England. Ordained July 24, 1809, at Lyon. Engaged in pastoral work in England 1810-1817, and in the Archdiocese of Baltimore, 1817-1828. Consecrated Archbishop of Baltimore, May 25, 1828. Convened and presided over the First and Second Provincial Councils of Baltimore in 1829 and 1833 respectively.
