Caroline Kohn and her twin sister Clara were born in Goodhue County Minnesota in 1886. Caroline weighed only 2 pounds when she was born. She was so small, it was said her entire head could fit inside a coffee cup. Her parents put her in a shoebox full of cotton and placed the box next to a wood furnace to keep her warm. She was not expected to survive. Caroline not only survived, but out lived her twin sister by 10 years.

Caroline married William Steffenhagen, a farmer from Frontenac MN. William and Caroline had three children, Emery, Donald, and William (Billy) who died at age 7 as the result of an accident on the farm.
