Lenard S. 'Bud' Reel

Longtime Alaskan and Homer resident Lenard S. "Bud" Reel died Friday, May 11, 2007, at Alaska Regional Hospital in Anchorage. He was 84.

A service will be held at a later date conducted by the Anchor Point V.F.W. Post No. 10221 and Homer American Legion Post No. 16.

Mr. Reel was born April 14, 1923, in Cataldo, Idaho.

"He left home at the age of 13 and learned life's lessons," his family said.

He entered the U.S. Army in 1942 and served with the 2nd Ranger Battalion at Omaha Beach and the 686th Engineers, leaving the service in 1945.

He moved to Alaska in 1964. He had lived in Tok, Kodiak Island and Anchorage before moving to Homer. He was the manager for Scotty Creek Lodge. He also worked at New England Fish, B and B Fisheries, Northern Alaska Fisheries and repaired rods and reels at his own shop until retiring in 1994.

Mr. Reel was a member of the Anchor Point V.F.W. and Homer American Legion.

"Bud left home when he was 13, jumped into life and never slowed down until he retired in Homer. He loved Alaska and was rich in friends there. His many family members outside of Alaska understood his feelings for 'God's Country.' He will rest in peace under the northern lights and be with God forevermore," his family said.

He was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters.

Mr. Reel is survived by his daughter, Judy Reel of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; three grandsons; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Bess and Christine of Washington and Julia of Idaho; brother, Cal of Texas; niece, Lassie of Soldotna; and numerous other nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were made by Peninsula Memorial Chapel.
