Betty McCarthy grew up on Chicago's North Side and graduated from the University of Chicago, and worked in administrative positions at the University of Chicago. Her parents were Conrad Stein, born Germany, and Mary Bernadine (Karralich) Stein, born Yugoslavia. She and her husband Chris McCarthy lived most of their married life in Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood; they had no children. She was active in the Chicago Herb Society and served a term as its president. Her ashes were scattered on the towpath at the Illinois & Michigan Canal State Park at Morris, Grundy County, Illinois, where her husband's ashes were scattered in 2009.
