Some indicate that he was named "John Gustavus" after his Mother's father, John Gustavus Perry; however, there is also some question regarding whether his other given name was "Abner" or if it was 'ALBERN' as listed on the Douglas County, OR death certificate. [If anyone has further information, please contact me.]

In records, such as the various censuses, he chose to use "John A." Copeland.

John's parents moved from GA after the war, going first to AL where some of his father's brothers were living, then moved the family on to Gonzales County, TX in the mid 1870s.

John and his brother William had been the first of the Copeland family to go to TX. As teenagers they went to TX with their Uncle John Perry and other relatives. They must have sent back glowing reports as his parents and family soon followed.

In Gonzales County he met and married Phoebe Elizabeth Mitchell on the 24 Jan 1878.

They had 8 children, two of whom died young. The first 5 were born in Gonzales County, TX, and the last two in Jackson County, OR.
