John's parents moved from GA after the war, going first to AL where some of his father's brothers were living, then moved the family on to Gonzales County, TX in the mid 1870s.
John and his brother William had been the first of the Copeland family to go to TX. As teenagers they went to TX with their Uncle John Perry and other relatives. They must have sent back glowing reports as his parents and family soon followed.
In Gonzales County he met and married Phoebe Elizabeth Mitchell on the 24 Jan 1878.
They had 8 children, two of whom died young. The first 5 were born in Gonzales County, TX, and the last two in Jackson County, OR.

J. A. Copeland Dead at 79
Mr. J. A. Copeland died Tuesday from injuries received from falling down the basement stairs at the local telephone exchange building Saturday evening. He and Mrs. Copeland, who were recently home from a stay of several months in California, were at the telephone building visiting with Mrs. J. S. Aldredge, former neighbor, when Mr. Copeland walked into the stairway opening and fell into the basement.
He was given immediate medical attention but never regained consciousness.
Funeral services were at the Methodist Church in Myrtle Creek Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock. Rev. T. G. Patterson, former pastor of the church, came here from McFarland, Oregon, to preach the sermon. Interment was in the Oddfellow Cemetery. M. S. Ritter of the Rodeburg Undertaking Co., was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
John A. Copeland was past 79 years of age at his death. He was born in the state of Georgia, March 31, 1850. He moved to Alabama with his parents when 17 years of age and in 1876 moved to Texas where he married Miss Lizzie Mitchell. In 1888 he came to Oregon and settled in Jackson County. In 1911 he moved to the present family home on North Myrtle.
The deceased is survived by his widow and by one daughter, Mrs. Harry Cash of Montague, California, and four sons, Jesse Copeland of Denver, Colorado, Harvey Copeland of Ft. Klamath, Oregon, Grover Copeland of Myrtle Creek, Oregon, and Clarence Copeland of Klamath Falls, Oregon.
