In 1941 Lindy was 19 yrs old attending Pasedena Junior Collage taking Aviation Classes when Pearl Harbor was bombed on Dec.7. Lindy joined the Navy and started Naval Aviation Cadet Training Program. In early 1943 he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps. and later assigned to Marine Corps. Air Station, Santa Barbara where he underwent Combat training in a F4U Corsair Fighter. In early 1945 as a Capt., Lindy joined VMF-214, Black Sheep Squadron just as VMF-214 deployed aboard the new USS FRANKLIN and headed for the battle of Okinawa.
