John Buchanan was the son of Joshua Buchanan and Nancy Emeline Greenwood. He served in the War of 1812 as a Private in Capt. Allen A. Hamilton's Co. Mounted Kentucky Militia from May 20, 1813 - Sept. 19, 1813.

His father, Joshua Buchanan was born in Scotland in 1741 and married Nancy Emeline Greenwood. They both died about 1781 in Virginia.

He married Mary Rosson/Rawson on Feb. 22, 1792.
