Johnnie built a career in the United States Army for 30 years until retirement in August 2000. During her military career she was assigned worldwide, obtained the highest senior enlisted rank possible and spent the last decade of her profession as a Command Sergeant Major in the Army's Quartermaster corps. She was a combat veteran and her numerous military awards include the Bronze Star, Legion of Merit, National Defense Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, numerous Meritorious Service, Army Commendation, and Army Achievement medals and various campaign ribbons. After retirement she began a decade long career in the Virginia Public School system, where she first taught students as a Special Education teacher at Peabody Middle school and later as an Army JROTC instructor at Petersburg High school. Johnnie was passionate about making a difference in the lives of everyone she touched, students, soldiers, friends and family alike. Her mentorship and love for all those around her made her a beloved, mother, sister, aunt, friend and Command Sergeant Major to all that knew her. For the last 14 years she was a faithful member of First New Birth Baptist Church of Manassas VA. She cherished Christian fellowship, cooking delicious meals for family and friends, enjoyed volunteer work and loved to travel all around the world. Her outstanding character and generosity were a blessing to all that she came in contact with. Johnnie is survived by one son: Jinez Font, of Honolulu, HI; four grandchildren: Desmond, Dedra, Dierra and Khamari Font. Her mother: Marie Jackson of Canton MS; four brothers: Andrew Jackson Jr., Percy Lee (Beverly) Jackson, and Eddie Lee Jackson all of Canton MS as well as Robert (Jackie) Jackson of Dallas TX. Her three sisters include: Mamie (Fred) Luckett, Annie (Lewis) Myers of Canton MS as well as Dorothy (Willie) Buchanan of Atlanta GA. She is also survived by one Uncle, Rev James (Lily) Ollie of Camden MS and two aunts, Geneva Ollie of Camden MS and Classie Griffin of Jackson MS as well as a host of nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held 6 to 9 p.m. Monday February 8, 2010 at the Chapel of William N. Bland and Son Funeral Home, Petersburg. The remains may also be viewed 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday February 9th at the same location. A funeral service will be held Saturday in Camden, MS. Funeral arrangements in are entrusted to the staff of Family Memorial Funeral Home, Camden, Ms.
