Alfred Butler, a veteran of the war with Mexico and a pioneer settler of Texas, was born about 1824 in Bertie County, North Carolina. Nothing is known about the first twenty-two years of his life. Even the names of his parents have been obscured by the passage of time. As a result, the origins of the family into which he was born are uncertain.
