Her husband Benjamin Church was a veteran of the Revolutionary War. He was a private, a life guard of General Washington for part of his service and was in several battles. He was also a prisoner of war in Kingston Jamaica after being captured at sea while on a merchant ship after discharge. He was then shipped on board a flag of truce, escaped at Port a Prince Haiti and then boarded and served on board the Maria, a ship with a letter of Marque
They had 12 children. She, sadly, died from grief after a twenty year son, also Benjamin Church, drowned from on board ship Angeronia (Capt. Isaac Burdick) The newspaper Newport Mercury, issued Saturday, May 26, 1804: Died in this town, very suddenly, on Thursday evening, and evidently occasioned by the untimely end of her son, Mrs. Mehitable Church in the forty-fifth year of her age. It is due to the merits of this lady to say she possessed many eminent virtues.
As a wife she was kind, faithful and endearing ; as a mother tender, affectionate, and discreet; as a friend beloved, esteemed, and respected. By her acquaintance, long will she be
remembered.
"All, all is right by God ordained or done;
And who but God resumed the friend he gave?"
