Ensign M. W. Bird, USNR, was designated Naval Aviator #7667 in 1941. Entered the service via the pre-war Aviation Cadet (AVCAD) program.

Was one of ten servicemen to perish when his PBY patrol plane, launched from NAS Pensacola, Fla., failed to return from a flight combined as a ASW and training mission over the Gulf of Mexico.

Ensign Bird was the son of Wellignton (1863 - ?) and Marion Park (McGill) Bird (1887 - 1979) as well as the older brother of Wallace.

Malcolm was a 1941 graduate of Middlebury College where he was a brother of the Vermont Beta chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. He married the former Miss Marjorie Jean Tomlinson (a Pi Beta Phi) on December 20, 1941 in Crestview, FL.
