Tyler Robert Baldwin, 19, of Blissfield, passed away on Thursday, February 3, 2011, as the result of injuries sustained in a car accident. Tyler was born July 31, 1991, in Wauseon, Ohio, the son of Sherry Baldwin Shepard and Mark Vandenberg. Tyler attended Jefferson High School in Monroe and graduated from Blissfield High School with the Class of 2010. He was an avid fan of the Detroit Tigers, Lions and Redwings. A lover of nature and animals, Tyler enjoyed spending time at the family cabin up north. Tyler also loved to read, especially the Harry Potter series. Tyler has joined his beloved dogs, Cypress and Dixie, and leaves behind his family including his parents, Sherry and Richard Shepard of Blissfield; father, Mark Vandenberg, of Monroe; maternal grandmother, Sharon Parks; paternal grandparents, Fran and Ron Beck, of Petersburg, MI; grandparents, Richard and Donna Shepard, of Jasper; his younger brother, Samuel Shepard, also of Blissfield; and many extended family members. He will be greatly missed by his family and best friend, Ken Geis. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather Ellis Baldwin. The funeral service for Tyler will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 8, 2011 at Wagley Funeral Home, Tagsold Chapel in Blissfield with Rev. Keith Smith officiating. Three people, including one from Bedford Township, were killed in a head-on accident this morning on US-223 in Whiteford Township when a pickup truck went out of control on the icy road and swerved into the opposite lane, police said.
Two victims were pronounced dead at the scene and the third died in Toledo Hospital, said Sgt. Brian Angerer of the Monroe County Sheriff's Office. The accident happened about 5:30 a.m. on US-223 west of Tabbert Rd. near the Lenawee County line.
All three victims, one of whom reportedly was a physician, apparently were on their way to their jobs when the accident happened, police said. The driver of the Ford F-250 was Dr. Sarah G. Prochaska-Carpenter, 30, of Blissfield. She was a doctor at a Toledo area hospital.
The other victims were identified as Alan J. Gies, 52, of Temperance, who was the driver of the 1988 Jeep pickup. The passenger was Tyler R. Baldwin, 19, of Blissfield. Sgt. Angerer said he believes the two also were on their way to work in the Ottawa Lake area.
For more than three hours during the investigation, police shut down about a mile section of the road between Tabbert and Memorial Hwy., formerly called Old US-223.
According to the preliminary investigation, the driver of a Ford F-250 was heading east when the truck went out of control on the icy surface. The vehicle traveled left of center and struck a westbound Jeep pickup truck with two people inside. It appeared road conditions and speed played a role in the accident, police said.
Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash while the third victim, a passenger in the Jeep, died a short time later in the hospital, Sgt. Angerer said.
