Peter J. Long, age 91, World War II veteran, former Scouter and executive with Sprint Communications (Carolina Telephone), died at Dogwood Forest Assisted Living Center in Roswell, Georgia on April 1, 2011.

He was born on July 7, 1919 in Reading, England and moved with his parents, the late Arthur James Long and Jesse Thomasine Long to Warrenton, Virginia where he grew up. He graduated from Warrenton High School in 1936. He was married to Jane Taliaferro Logan of Harrisonburg, Virginia on April 6, 1942.

Pete entered the U.S. Army in February 1941 and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant of Infantry in July 1942. He served with the 78th Infantry Division in Europe during World War II and was separated from the Army in 1946 as a Major. Pete continued service as a Reservist and was recalled to Active Duty during the Korean Conflict. He retired from the Army as a Lieutenant Colonel after 21 years of Active and Reserve duty.

Following World War II, Mr. and Mrs. Long moved to Tarboro, NC where he was employed for 39 years with Carolina Telephone Company. He held positions in the accounting, public relations, and personnel departments before being named Assistant Vice President of Human Resources. He retired from Sprint Communications as the Director of Economic Development in 1984.

Pete was an active member of Calvary Episcopal Church where he sang in the choir and served as a lay reader, vestryman, and senior warden. "Mr. Pete" was a loved and respected Scouter for 40 years, serving as Cubmaster, Pack 138, and Scoutmaster, Troop 49 in Tarboro. He also served as Council President and Area Vice President. In recognition of his service, he received the awards of Silver Beaver, Silver Antelope and the Saint George Award. In addition, Pete was active with the American Red Cross, United Fund, Cancer Society and Tarboro Community Outreach.

Pete was preceded in death by his wife, Jane. He is survived by two sons, Peter J Long, Jr. of Kaneohe, HI and Thomas L Long of Roswell, GA; four grandchildren, Peter J Long III, Vicki Long, Andrew L Long, and Thomas Nelson Long; and seven great-grandchildren, James Todd Landenberger, Joshua Charles Landenberger, Thomas Pennington Long, Taliaferro Ann Long, Brayden Kona Frias, Brock Kaeo Frias, and Logan Eileen Kiana Long.

The date of funeral services and interment of his ashes at Calvary Episcopal Church in Tarboro will be announced in the future.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to the Boy Scouts of America, Tarboro Community Outreach or the Alzheimer's Association.

The family expresses appreciation to the staff of the Reminiscence unit of Dogwood Forest Assisted Living Center and Compassionate Hospice for their compassionate care.
