Richard Ullom ULLOM, Dick (Richard Ray,) 86, of Middlebourne, passed away November 15, 2005, in Wetzel County Hospital in New Martinsville, W.Va. Dick Ullom was born January 23, 1919, on the property later known, as the Wagner Fruit Farm near Vincent, Ohio. He was the son of the late Charles Ullom and Nora Wolfe. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Josephine Ada (Dodie) Doris Charlene and Virginia Rose (Jean.) He is survived by his brother, Gary Ullom and wife, Greta, of Winter Haven, Fla.; as well as by his sons; Richard Thomas (Tom) of Tampa, Fla., Philip Logan and wife, Beth, of Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich., and Paul Judson and wife, Dawn, and their children; Alex and Ashley of Apollo Beach, Fla. He served in the U.S., Army, during World War II and entered France across Utah Beach on D-Day plus 11 as a technical sergeant in the 195th , Ordnance Company of the 1st, Army ("the Big Red One",) and drove-in the Red Ball Express, ferrying ammunition and fuel to Pattons 3rd Army in its breakout across France and into Germany. Upon return to civilian life, he resumed work at the Parkersburg National Bank; married Pauline Juanita Carroll; and raised his children while residing in Belpre. After proudly watching his youngest son Paul, graduate as valedictorian of Belpre High School in 1979, he retired from PNB with 40, years of service, and moved to Middlebournne, W.Va., starting a second career at Tyler County Bank. He worked there for another 24 years, retiring on April 30, 2003 with a total of 44 years in the banking sector. He loved all aspects of working on and with automobiles and was an accomplished mechanic upholsterer, and auto painter. He also loved both woodworking and metalworking and worked in his wood shop to his final days. He was active in the Belpre Little League as a coach and fundraiser, for over a decade and participated in the original construction of the facilities at Citation Park. A Memorial Service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Furbee Funeral Home, 217 Main Street, Middlebourne, (304-758-2166). The family requests donations to Samaritan's Purse charity at www.samaritanpurse.org. The family of Dick Ullom also would like to acknowledge and express deep appreciation for the love and friendship and care extended to Dick by his devoted friends, Gary Davis of Vienna and Nina Smith and Mary Bennett of Middlebourne.
