Margaret J. Furtney
Margaret Jean (Peg) Furtney, 72, of Cheyenne died Aug. 29 at United Medical Center-West in Cheyenne.
Peg was born on Jan. 19, 1934, in Litchfield, Minn., to Delmar and Pauline Walters.
Peg graduated from Glenwood High School in Glenwood, Minn., as class valedictorian in 1951.
She married Vernon Edward Furtney on April 4, 1952.
Peg is survived by two sons, Steve Furtney and his wife Camille, and Jerry Furtney; granddaughters, Erica Lawson and her husband Pat, Sarah Furtney, Meredith Furtney and Lauren Furtney; and great-grandchildren, Joryn and Andrah Lawson.
Peg was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Vern, who died unexpectedly in April 1975 shortly after the couple's 23rd wedding anniversary.
After having worked at home as a dedicated and loving mother and spouse for several years to raise her sons and support Vern with their independent road construction company, she continued her formal education by attending Colorado State University to earn a bachelor's of science degree and graduated magna cum laude in social work in 1976. She then went on to earn a masters of science degree in social work from Denver University in 1979.
Peg worked in social work over the next 25 years and was an intensely dedicated, conscientious, compassionate and ethical professional whose primary interest and focus was on the well-being of her clients. She was often frustrated by the time and focus on the paperwork requirements deemed as necessary documentation by her supervisors. Her passion was to assist her clients with their needs.
As well as being a lifelong student of curiosity in the world around her, Peg lived a full life of adventure. With a husband and two sons who all enjoyed their time in the great outdoors, she accompanied them on many hunting, fishing and camping excursions and acquired a deep love for nature and the natural environment.
She took up kayaking, downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, backpacking, winter camping and mountain climbing, all in later years coming after Vern's death. She has enjoyed and shared many adventures with her family and good friends over the years.
Peg was also a person who enjoyed culture.
She was an avid reader who found great pleasure in reading and sharing recommendations with anyone and everyone else who had an interest in books. She greatly enjoyed music throughout her life in addition to plays, theater productions, movies and all other forms of the performing arts.
Peg always kept room in her life for family and friends. Most of her adventures were shared adventures with family and friends, whether they be outdoor excursions, cultural events, travel to distant places or simple holiday celebrations with family and friends, she always cherished the opportunity to be with people, and she worked hard to include her family and friends and to share her life interests at every opportunity.
Peg will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
A Celebration of Life service in honor of Peg will be 10 a.m. today at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Cheyenne.
Cremation has taken place.
Donations in Peg's name and honor can be made to The American Cancer Society, Hospice of Cheyenne or the Unitarian Universalist Church of Cheyenne.
