Beverly's father Charles Bell Gibson was a prominent surgeon and a leading physician of the Confederate States medical corps.


Beverly enlisted in the C.S. Navy on 19 September 1864, and was appointed to the C.S. Naval Academy in Richmond in December 1864. He served as Acting Machinist's Mate on board the school ship "Fleming" under the command of Lt. William H. Parker, and on the C.S.S. Chickamauga. He later served as Acting Midshipman on board the C.S.S. Patrick Henry.
