He enlisted from Washington County as a Private in Company "E", 10th Iowa Infantry on 24 August 1861. Following the Battle of Corinth, he was discharged for disability on 9 September 1862. He mustered into Company "B", 22nd Iowa Infantry on 9 March 1863, and was mustered out with the regiment in Savannah on July 25, 1865.
He first married Amanda Ellen Jester in Washington, Iowa on September 28, 1865. They had one daughter, Clara, and apparently were divorced, as Amanda later remarried. He next married Lucinda Johns on 22 December 1873, and they had five children: Wyatt, Lette May, Roy, Orville and Welthe. After her death he married Eliza A. Rogers on 12 August 1889, and sometime thereafter moved to Kansas. By his death, his wartime injuries had left him blind.
He lived in Hillsboro, Marion County, Kansas for many years. He is buried in a cemetery described at the time as "two miles east of Hillsboro".
