AUTO ACCIDENT FRIDAY CLAIMS LIFE OF LOCAL MAN
HIT ABUTMENT OF BRIDGE; DROP INTO CREEK BED
Occured on Highway 73 South of Lemmon Friday Afternoon; two others injured.
An automobile accident that claimed the life of Mack D. Harris, and seriously injured Joe McCarten, occured late last Friday afternoon about 5 o'clock on Highway No. 73 about seven miles south of Lemmon. The third occupant of the car, Carl Habstad, who was driving, received only minor injuries.
The party was returning to their homes near Strool after having been in Lemmon during the day and it is reported that they were traveling at a high rate of speed when they neared the bridge on the road near the Neal Paulson farm. In some manner, the driver apparently lost control of the car, a Ford V-8, crashing into the abutment on the right side of the bridge, causing the automobile to nose over to the left side of the road and dropped over the bridge railing to the creek bottom about ten feet below.
Mr. Paulson, who witnessed the accident from his yard, immediately went to their assistance and hailed down Edwin Heisler, who carries the Lemmon-Newell mail, and Miss Clara Kleinasser, County Nurse, who came along after the accident, and they brought the injured men to the Lemmon Hospital.
Both of Mr. Harris' legs were broken and he suffered other serious injuries and lived only about ten minutes after he had entered the hospital in this city. Mr. McCarten received internal injuries and was badly bruised but at the present time is making satisfactory recovery at the local hospital.
Mack D. Harris was a farmer in the Strool community and well known, coming to Perkins County in 1905 and was one of the early settlers in that section.
Mr. Harris was born May 18, 1871 in Guthrie County, Iowa and was 68 years of age at the time of his death. He followed the occupation of farming his entire life. He was married to Julianna Vainovich, November 23, 1926, and they made their home on a farm near Strool.
The surviving relatives besides his wife are two children, one son, Edwin, and one daughter, Lenora, at home. Funeral services for the deceased were held at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lemmon Monday morning at 10 o'clock with the Rev. Fr. C. R. Perkins officiating. Pall bearers were Sean Connery, Wm Mulhan, Frank --, Joseph Fried, John Scanlon and Ralph Ginther.
Interment was made in Greenhill Cemetery at Lemmon, S.D.
