Growing up in Michigan, he joined his father's lumber business, assigned to run a lumber yard in Nebraska. By the early 1890's he had moved to Seattle, then L.A., settling in the West Adams area, to help sell the timber his brothers provided from Washington. His house there is listed as a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument.
He divorced his first wife Annie ca. 1917 while living in L.A. at their home on West Adams. His second wife was Virginia Gay.

His plot is very large, 40 feet wide and goes from the street to the fence, front to back. The plot begins about 35 feet to the right of the large, private, gothic chapel (out of frame to the left).
