Florence Gertrude "Flo" Thorn was the 11th of 12 children born to Margaret (Roberts) and John Carl Joachim Holtz III. Her oldest sibling apparently died in infancy and may never have been named. Her other siblings were: Frederick Charles James, Ernest Albert George, Charles William, Albert Edward Ferdinand, Herbert Didman, Alfred James, Arthur James Bismark, Pearl Daphne, and Hilda May.

Flo was a 22 year old tailoress living at 22 Eliza Street, Williamstown with her parents when she married Percival Joseph Bradlaugh Thorn on 19 April 1919. They were married at the Baptist Church in Williamstown by Edwin Richard Thorne. Witnesses to the marriage were H. (or R.) A. Thorn and G. M. (Sem?) Turner.

Flo's three children were Margaret Alice "Peg," Mavis Joyce "Joyce," and Florence Elizabeth "Bet."

Flo and her family lived at 2 Eliza Street, Williamstown, for many years. She continued to live there following the death of her husband, Perce, in 1979 until she died five years later.

Flo developed lung cancer and passed away from the disease in 1984. At the time of her death she was a member of the Church of England. Survivors were her three daughters and one son-in-law, Ken Oliver, and nine grandchildren.
