Dr. Vivian L. Countley Anderson, age 77, a long time resident of Washington, DC and Rockville, Md., passed away suddenly and peacefully in her home on Monday, February 25, 2008.
Born in Philadelphia, Pa., she was the daughter and Turner and Carrie(Simmons)Countley.
Dr. Vivian Anderson began her career as an educator in Philadelphia and Washington, DC. She retired a world traveler with many years of Foreign Service for the United States Agency for International Development(USAID). She earned various specialized educational degrees and service awards for her leadership in the development of mainly third world countries. The most prestigious among those awards was the Ralph J. Bunche Award for Diplomatic Excellence that she received for her work with Dr. Leon Sullivan and O. I. C. International. After retirement, as an extension of her desire to educate, she served as a Docent at the Smithsonian Institute. She also served for several years on the Board of Directors of her residence(Grosvenor Park in Rockville), where the residents have expressed to her family how much she will be missed.
Vivian was predeceased by her husband, Erskine Anderson of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, her mother and father, two sisters, Queen Mosby and Corine Johnson, 2 brothers, Ernest and Herbert Countley, and her nephew, Curtiss Mosby. She is survived by 5 nieces and nephews and many great nieces, great nephews, cousins and friends.
There will be a memorial service at the Savin Funeral Home, 802 N. 12th St., Philadelphia, Pa., on Tuesday, March 4, 2008 at 12:00 Noon. Dr. Anderson's family is also planning a Memorial Service in Rockville/DC in consideration of her many friends and associates who cannot travel to Philadelphia.
