Joseph Riston enlisted in Co. B, 123rd Pennsylvania Infantry on 7 August 1862. He was discharged as a Corporal on 13 May 1863.

On 26 July 1866 he married Virginia Campbell (daughter of Alexander and Mary Gray [Stoddard] Campbell) at Bradys Bend, Pennsylvania. Their children were: John Stoddart, Nellie Hunt, May Campbell, Ada Keturah, and Luella Esther.
